Creating a Happier Workplace – Part 2 – A Guide for Employers and Managers

If you're a business owner or manager, you're probably already aware that employee wellbeing directly impacts performance, retention, and overall company culture. But with rising levels of work-related stress and burnout, the question becomes: Are your employees truly happy at work? And just as importantly, how can you help them feel more fulfilled without sacrificing productivity or profitability?

Workplace happiness isn't about gimmicks or perks. It’s about creating a culture where people feel valued, supported, and motivated. Here are some of the most effective strategies we’ve seen across industries to help boost happiness at work, not just for your team, but for you as a leader too.

1. Recognise and Reward Effort

  • Actions: Regularly celebrate both major achievements and everyday successes, whether through formal awards or simple acknowledgments. Recognising employees’ efforts makes them feel appreciated, which can enhance morale and motivation.

2. Foster Open, Two-Way Communication

  • Actions: Establish clear channels for communication and feedback, listen attentively to employee concerns, and act on their input. When employees feel heard and valued, it fosters higher job satisfaction.

3. Empower Your People

  • Actions: Provide employees with autonomy over their tasks and involve them in decision-making processes. When employees feel empowered, they are more likely to take ownership of their work, resulting in increased job satisfaction.

4. Build a Positive Workplace Culture

  • Actions: Promote a culture of teamwork, inclusivity, and positivity. Organise team-building events and encourage a sense of community. A supportive culture can strengthen relationships and boost overall happiness among employees.

5. Prioritise Mental Health and Wellbeing

  • Actions: Offer access to mental health support resources, provide First Aid for Mental Health training or workshops on mental health. Support flexible working arrangements to help reduce stress and prevent burnout. Maintain an open dialogue about mental health to eliminate stigma and ensure everyone feels supported.

The Health and Safety Executive reported nearly 1 million UK workers experienced work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2023/24. Prevention must start in the culture.

You Don’t Have to Do It All at Once

Time and budget are always a consideration, even a few small, well-chosen initiatives can make a big impact. Improving happiness at work isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s a strategic investment in your people and your business.

As Richard Branson famously said: “Take care of your employees and they will take care of your business. It’s as simple as that.”

How to Improve Your Happiness at Work – Part 1 – A Guide for Employees

Have you ever found yourself wondering: Am I actually happy at work? Do I feel fulfilled by what I do? Is a healthy work-life balance even possible for me? You're not alone. Work is a huge part of our lives, and how we feel about it deeply affects our mood, mental health, and even our relationships outside of work.

The good news? You don’t have to wait for a promotion or a perfect role to start feeling better about your job. You have more influence over your workplace happiness than you might realise, and that influence starts with your mindset, habits, and daily choices.

Here are some simple but powerful strategies you can begin using right away:

1. Shift Your Perspective

  • Focus on what you can control: While you may not control every task or decision, you do control how you show up, the effort you give, and how you interact with others.

  • Reframe challenges: Try to see problems as opportunities to grow. This small mental shift can make a huge difference over time.

Tip: Look up “Growth Mindset” start embracing it to turn obstacles into personal wins.

2. Set Personal Goals

  • Align with your values: Whether you're chasing creativity, stability, or purpose, setting small goals aligned with what matters to you can give your day more meaning.

  • Celebrate your progress: Don’t wait for big milestones. Recognise the little wins too, they’re the stepping stones to motivation and fulfilment.

3. Embrace Change

  • Stay open to opportunities: This might mean asking to shadow another role, volunteering for a project, or reflecting on whether it’s time for a bigger change.

  • Adapt and grow: Workplaces evolve, staying flexible and curious keeps you grounded during uncertainty.

4. Celebrate Small Wins

  • Acknowledge your efforts: Making it through a tough day or ticking off a tricky task counts. It all builds momentum.

  • Share your wins: Talk about progress with a supportive colleague or friend, it boosts morale for everyone.

5. Create a Positive Routine

  • Start with intention: Whether it’s a morning walk, journaling, or setting a daily goal, small rituals can help you feel grounded and proactive.

  • Take breaks: Short pauses during the day (even just five minutes away from your screen) can help reset your mind and reduce stress.

6. Build a Healthier Work-Life Balance

  • Set boundaries: Communicate clearly about your availability. Turn off notifications after work and respect your own time. You don’t need to feel guilty about protecting your time.

  • Explore flexibility: If possible, ask about remote work or adjusted hours. Many employers are more open to flexible arrangements than you might expect.

7. Support Your Mental Health

  • Use available support: Whether it’s a mental health first aider, your GP, or local resources, don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re struggling.

  • Strengthen your resilience: Learning to manage stress and protect your wellbeing is an investment in both your work life and personal life.

8. Practice Mindfulness

  • Be present: Try to focus on one task at a time. It reduces overwhelm and improves how you feel about your day.

  • Breathe deeply: Take a few conscious breaths when stress hits. It sounds simple, but it resets your nervous system and clears your head.

A Final Thought

Work doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. If your current job isn’t ideal, you can still take steps to make it more manageable and even enjoyable with the right tools, support, and mindset.

That said, if you find yourself consistently dreading work or feeling drained despite your efforts, it might be time to reflect on the bigger picture. As the quote goes:

“Your nervous system will always choose a familiar hell over an unfamiliar heaven.” - Kathy Overman

Change is uncomfortable, but staying stuck has a cost too. Looking deeper into what you want long term and how you can plan for that change might be the next step for you achieving improved Happiness at Work.  Your happiness at work matters. You’re not powerless.
